Amelia Park Arena was honored this week as the Reader Raves Best Skating Rink for the 3rd year in a row, and as I was speaking with folks in regards to what we do, it occured to me that this weekend’s events really signify what we are all about at the rink – COMMUNITY.

Saturday, October 17, we are offering a FREE Ball Hockey Clinic in partnership with New England Ball Hockey (NEBH) and Bauer for kids ages 6-13 from 10am-1pm. The rink has entered into a multi-year agreement with NEBH that will be bringing expanded youth clinics, youth camps, adult tournaments, and hopefully a youth travel team from the Westfield area. NEBH will also hold a spring youth jamboree as well. NEBH & Amelia Park Arena will host 2 tournaments a year in the Dek Hockey facility, one in the spring and one in the fall, for our adult dek hockey players. The first adult tournament held at Amelia Park will be named the “Amelia Ferst Memorial Tournament” and 75% of the tournament revenue will be donated back to the Amelia Park Arena, in efforts to Grow the Game.

Our 3rd Annual Pink in the Rink will also be on Saturday, later in the afternoon from 4:30-7pm. This breast cancer awareness event will feature a Western Mass Blizzard Girls Hockey Game @ 5PM, a Public Skate after (WEAR YOUR PINK), raffles, and a bake sale. Proceeds from the event will benefit area Breast Cancer Charities. In the past, we have donated funds to Rays of Hope, CHD’s Cancer House of Hope and the Burke Cancer Center at Westfield’s own Baystate Noble Hospital. Special thanks goes out to our AMAZING Chairwoman and Survivor, Shari Jarrell, who works tirelessly to help us spread the word! Please come and support!

SATURDAY NIGHT PUBLIC SKATES ARE BACK! All are welcome to check out our Saturday Night Public Skate from 8-9:50pm. Admittance is $8/person and $4/skate rental. We will be looking to do some special events with our skates and we are always looking for suggestions.

Over the next couple of weeks in preparation for hockey season, we are working with volunteers to make our rink game ready. Thanks to Westfield High and St. Mary’s High Boys Hockey Teams that are volunteering their time to not only help in the rink, but lend their muscle to prepare our grounds for the winter. If you are looking to volunteer, we would love to host you! We are now looking for volunteers & committee members for our Annual New England Invitational Sled Hockey Tournament, April 15-17, 2016. If you are interested, please contact me at aparkcarole@gmail.com

On a sad note, Amelia’s Garden is closed for the season. The leaves may be turning to brilliant colors, but Bob & Lois, our gardening crew, and their crew of volunteers have prepared the garden for the winter and that means it’s now the rink’s FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR. In the great words of my friend, Jon Peloquin, the former Springfield Falcons PA Announcer, NOW, LET’S PLAY SOME HOCKEY!

Amelia Park Ice Arena …it’s more than an ice arena, it’s a destination…
