2011 FLOODING OF THE OUTDOOR RINK AT AMELIA PARK ICE ARENA
Wednesday, December 29, 2011 - The rink is in full swing of Holiday break! This place is crazy! A quick glance outside doesn't give us good news as the center of the rink is dry and clear of ice or water. BUMMER! Unless a miracle happens, it looks like Mother Nature will win and there will be no skating on the outdoor rink for New Year's Day. We will keep trying!
Tuesday, December 28, 2011 - The Westfield Fire Department were kind enough to head down to assist in flooding the rink in the afternoon. A diffuser was placed at the center and it worked for a bit. As we watched it fill up we started noticing the water slowing leaking out of the sides, under the dashers. That night, Joe, Ray and Carole worked very hard putting on light mists on to the rink. It seemed like they started to take. Will it be enough? We even had a mister for the fire hose and it seemed like it was taking. Here's hoping it is still there in the morning.

Sunday, December 26, 2011 - THE BLIZZARD THAT SORT OF WAS! We couldn't work tonight due to the snow and the crazy winds whipping through Westfield. Here's hoping a good base is in place for Monday!
Saturday, December 25, 2011 - CHRISTMAS DAY - WE TOOK THE DAY OFF!
Friday, December 24, 2011 - The staff slowly misted the rink in hopes to add a base layer.
Thursday, December 23, 2011 - Boy do we have a lot of plastic! The laying of the plastic continued. As we laid it down, we added snow from the zamboni runs on top of the plastic against the boards. Here's hoping nothing will leak out. FINGERS CROSSED!
Wednesday, December 22, 2011 - We continued prepping the outdoor rink. The staff was busy laying down plastic and beating the wind as they tried to seal them together. It is a pretty daunting project with the size of a 175' x 65' rink. Special valves and meters arrrived from the Westfield Water Department.
Tuesday, December 21, 2011 - Pat Garvey of Garvey Landscaping was kind enough to get sand donated to our project. Our staff and volunteers shoveled sand around the edges as the rink is built to drain out rain. The staff misted the sand in hopes that the sand hardens up against the boards. Carole Appleton, Executive Director of the rink, met with Westfield Fire Chief Bill Phelon and firefighter Ray Neilson for input on the BIG flood.
